It took a while, but Google Messages is finally catching up with one of the most requested features: real-time live location sharing. The new capability is now rolling out and brings Google’s default messaging app much closer to what users have long enjoyed in apps like WhatsApp.
The feature does exactly what you’d expect. Instead of sending a static Maps pin, you can now share your live movement directly inside a chat. Once enabled, the recipient sees your position update in real time on a map card embedded in the conversation.
Using it is straightforward. Tap the attachment (“+”) button, choose Location, and you’ll now see two options: a one-time location or the new real-time sharing mode. Pick the duration whether that’s an hour, the rest of the day, or until you manually stop and Messages handles the rest.

Google says the tool is meant for everyday coordination, like meeting friends in busy places or letting family track your trip home. Importantly, the company keeps control in the user’s hands: you can stop sharing anytime, and the app clearly shows when a live location is active.
While this isn’t groundbreaking live location has been around for years elsewhere it does close an obvious gap for Google Messages and strengthens the overall RCS experience on Android. The rollout is happening gradually, so if you don’t see it yet, it should land on more devices over the coming weeks.
