OpenAI has begun testing advertisements inside ChatGPT for users in the United States who are on the Free tier and the new ChatGPT Go subscription. This marks a major shift in how the AI service is monetized, as ads are now being integrated directly into the conversational experience for lower-cost users.
The rollout, which started on February 9, 2026, places clearly labeled sponsored ads below ChatGPT responses for logged-in adults on the Free and Go plans. Ads are designed to be visually separate from the AI’s core output and will not influence or alter the chatbot’s answers. OpenAI says advertisers will have no access to personal conversations or chat history, and ads will not appear near sensitive topics like health, mental health, or politics.
Ads can be shown based on the topic of your current conversation, past interactions, and other contextual signals. For example, someone asking about meals might see ads for grocery delivery or meal kits matched to the chat topic. Users can also turn off ad personalization, hide ads, or clear ad data through in-app settings if they prefer less targeted content.
The decision to test ads comes as part of OpenAI’s effort to support broader access to ChatGPT while funding infrastructure and ongoing development. However, paid subscribers on higher-tier plans including Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, and Education will not see ads, preserving an ad-free experience for those tiers.
