Apple removes Night Mode Portrait feature from iPhone 17 Pro models.

Apple’s latest iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max arrive with major camera hardware upgrades, but one long-standing feature has quietly disappeared. Apple has confirmed that Night Mode Portrait is no longer supported on the 17 Pro lineup, a capability available on every Pro-series iPhone since the iPhone 12 Pro.

According to Apple’s updated camera feature list and first spotted by users, Portrait mode no longer activates Night Mode in low light, and the phone also stops saving depth data during Night Mode shots. This means you can no longer convert low-light photos into Portraits afterward, a feature still available on previous-generation Pro models.

The change affects all cameras, including the selfie shooter, and Apple has not yet provided an explanation. Reports suggest the removal may be related to the revamped 48MP “Fusion” camera pipeline and updated low-light processing, which may conflict with depth mapping during long exposures.

Despite the omission, Night Mode continues to work normally in standard Photo mode on the iPhone 17 Pro series, and the new camera system still promises improved low-light performance overall. However, for users who frequently take portrait shots in dim environments, this will feel like a noticeable downgrade.

Apple hasn’t indicated whether the feature might return in a future update, making this one of the more unexpected changes in this year’s Pro lineup.
