A major report from The Information reveals that Apple has consolidated its artificial intelligence strategy under software chief Craig Federighi, accelerating plans to overhaul its digital assistant, Siri. As part of the shift, Apple is planning to leverage Google’s Gemini AI models to power a next-generation Siri chatbot and broader Apple Intelligence features in upcoming software updates, including iOS 27 later in 2026.
According to the report, Apple reorganized its AI teams in late 2025, moving Siri development directly under Federighi’s software division to streamline efforts and finally deliver a more capable assistant after delays in rolling out earlier Apple Intelligence features. By partnering with Google and licensing Gemini’s large language models, Apple aims to give Siri deep conversational and contextual capabilities that go well beyond its traditional voice-command role.
The revamped Siri expected to launch with iOS 27 will function more like a full-fledged chatbot, supporting continuous conversational interactions, better world-knowledge answers, and tighter integration across iPhones, iPads, and Macs. Bloomberg’s reporting also suggests the updated voice assistant will run on a custom Gemini-based model, internally referred to as Campos, helping Apple compete directly with rivals such as OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Google’s own assistant tech.
