Apple planning to use Google Gemini for Siri

According to several reports, Apple has quietly been exploring the idea of using Gemini, Google’s large language model, to power a much smarter version of its voice assistant. It looks like Apple might be planning a major shake-up for Siri and this time, it could involve teaming up with longtime rival Google.

If these talks move forward, it could be one of Apple’s boldest moves in years.

For over a decade, Siri has been Apple’s go-to digital helper. But while it made waves when it first arrived, it hasn’t really kept up with the likes of Google Assistant or newer tools like ChatGPT. Most people still use Siri for setting timers, checking the weather, or simple tasks not much beyond that.

Behind the scenes, Apple has been working on its own large language models, but progress has been slower than expected. Turning to Google could give Apple a shortcut, letting it leapfrog ahead without starting from scratch.

Reports from outlets like Bloomberg and Reuters suggest Apple is asking Google to build a special version of Gemini that could run on Apple’s private infrastructure.

That approach would give Apple two key benefits:

  • It could keep user data locked within its own systems (a big deal for Apple’s privacy promise).
  • It could offer advanced, human-like conversation abilities far beyond what Siri can do today.

Apple has also spoken with OpenAI and Anthropic about similar partnerships, but Google currently seems to be the front-runner.

There’s no official timeline yet, and these discussions are still described as “early.” However, analysts believe Apple is targeting a launch sometime in 2026 if things go smoothly.

It’s possible that the new version of Siri could be announced during a future WWDC once Apple finalizes its plans. For now, the company is gradually rolling out smaller AI-driven features under its Apple Intelligence banner, but nothing close to what Gemini could offer.
