Apple Announces Third-Party App Store Support for Japan Market

Apple has officially announced support for third-party app stores and alternative payment methods in the Japan market, marking a major shift in its iOS distribution strategy to comply with new local regulations. Under the updated rules tied to Japan’s Mobile Software Competition Act (MSCA), iPhone users in Japan will be able to install apps from authorized third-party marketplaces in addition to Apple’s own App Store.

The changes, which begin with iOS 26.2, also allow developers to offer external payment options or their own in-app purchase systems for digital goods and services, a departure from Apple’s long-standing requirement to use its in-App Purchase system. Apple will still apply a reduced 5 % commission on transactions through third-party stores and is requiring basic notarization and security checks to help protect users.

Apple says the update preserves user privacy, safety controls, and content ratings while giving developers and consumers more choice in how they distribute and purchase apps within Japan. This move follows similar policy changes in the European Union, making Japan one of the first markets outside Europe where Apple is rolling out expanded app distribution support.

The new rules go into effect immediately for eligible devices in Japan, representing a significant step toward opening the iOS ecosystem in response to regulatory pressure.
