
Samsung just solved foldable phones’ biggest problem at least on paper. The company has officially announced Flex Titanium, a new display technology coming to its next-generation Galaxy foldables, and it’s targeting the one issue that has followed every foldable smartphone since the category launched: the crease.
Flex Titanium isn’t a change to the phone’s frame or hinge, it’s a redesign of the display stack itself. Samsung has integrated two titanium-based components into the OLED panel: a paper-thin titanium-alloy film beneath the display and a titanium support plate underneath the display module. Together they provide structural rigidity while still allowing the screen to fold repeatedly without adding meaningful thickness. The titanium-alloy film is less than 30% the thickness of a human hair, which gives you a sense of how precisely engineered this is.
The numbers Samsung is putting behind the durability claim are significant. The titanium-alloy layer offers around 20 times greater stiffness than the conventional polymer films used in previous foldable displays. That stiffness is what keeps the display flatter when unfolded, which directly reduces crease visibility. Samsung also says the redesigned stack improves power efficiency, though detailed measurements haven’t been published yet.
Flex Titanium is expected to debut with the Galaxy Z Fold 8 and Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra at Galaxy Unpacked on July 22 just eight days away. Samsung describes the technology as the result of lessons learned across seven generations of Galaxy foldable devices, and the framing suggests this is a meaningful materials science step rather than a marketing refresh.
One broader implication worth noting Samsung Display supplies OLED panels to other manufacturers including Apple. Whether titanium-based display technology eventually finds its way into a foldable iPhone is speculation at this point, but the technology now exists in a commercially deployed form.
