Every year around this time, the chip rumour cycle kicks into gear and 2026 is no different. Except this time, the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 leaks come with a twist that nobody expected: Samsung might be making it. After years of Qualcomm relying almost exclusively on TSMC for its flagship silicon, reports emerged of Qualcomm CEO Cristiano Amon travelling to South Korea for foundry negotiations. That one detail sent the tech world into a spin.

But slow down. The actual picture is far less clear-cut than those headlines implied and it’s worth separating what’s confirmed from what’s speculation, because right now there’s a lot of both.

The most honest read right now: Qualcomm is probably still deciding. Dual sourcing splitting production between both foundries is also a real possibility, one that would explain why leaks keep pointing in two directions at once. It wouldn’t be the first time a chipmaker hedged its bets across fabs.

The 2nm process is where most sources converge, regardless of which foundry ends up making it. Moving from the current 3nm node to 2nm means more transistors in the same die area which typically translates to better performance per watt, not just raw speed. For phones, that means better sustained performance under gaming loads and improved battery efficiency. Both are areas where the current Elite Gen 5 already leads the market, so the Gen 6 could extend that gap further.

Here’s an angle that most coverage misses: Samsung may contribute thermal technology regardless of who manufactures the chip. Reports point to Samsung’s Heat Path Block (HPB) tech potentially being used in the Gen 6’s thermal management layer. That matters because sustained performance, not peak benchmarks, is where Android flagships have historically struggled. Better heat dissipation means the chip runs at higher clocks for longer without throttling. It’s an unsexy detail with very real consequences for gamers and power users.
