Rumors surrounding Apple’s 2026 flagship lineup suggest the Pro models of the iPhone 18 series could move closer to a fully port-less and slot-less future at least in selected markets.
While nothing is official yet, multiple reports indicate that the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max may launch as eSIM-only devices in additional regions, expanding beyond the countries that already adopted the change in recent years.
Expanding Apple’s eSIM Strategy
Apple first introduced eSIM-only iPhones in the United States with the iPhone 14 lineup. Since then, the company has gradually extended the approach to more markets with newer generations.
With the iPhone 17 series, reports claimed that countries like the United States, Japan, Saudi Arabia, and parts of the Middle East received eSIM-only variants, while Europe and several Asian markets continued to offer a physical SIM tray alongside eSIM support.
Now, leaks suggest Apple could widen the eSIM-only rollout with the iPhone 18 Pro models potentially including more European and Asian regions this time.
Why Apple Might Remove the SIM Tray
The reasoning appears strategic:
- More internal space: Removing the SIM tray frees up small but valuable space inside the chassis.
- Battery gains: That space could be used for a slightly larger battery or improved internal layout.
- Simplified design: Apple has been steadily reducing physical components, aligning with its long-term vision of a cleaner, more sealed device.
eSIM adoption has grown significantly worldwide, with most major carriers now supporting digital activation. For frequent travelers, eSIM also makes switching networks easier without swapping physical cards.
Not a Global Shift Yet
Despite the rumors, a full worldwide removal of the SIM tray seems unlikely in one go. Apple historically differentiates hardware by region. For example, China continues to prefer dual physical SIM models due to local carrier policies.
If the reports are accurate, Apple may again take a region-by-region approach rather than enforcing a universal eSIM-only standard.
What to Expect
At this stage, the eSIM-only iPhone 18 Pro models remain unconfirmed rumors. However, Apple’s recent track record suggests that expanding eSIM-only devices is a realistic next step.
More details are expected closer to Apple’s traditional September launch window in 2026.
