Apple is reportedly preparing a major leap in connectivity with its next in-house modem, the C2, which is expected to bring 5G satellite support to upcoming iPhone models.
According to recent leaks, the C2 modem will support the NR-NTN (New Radio – Non-Terrestrial Network) standard, a 5G technology designed to enable communication via satellites. This would go beyond Apple’s current satellite features, such as Emergency SOS and roadside assistance, which are limited to basic text-based communication in areas without cellular coverage.
With NR-NTN support, future iPhones reportedly the iPhone 18 Pro and 18 Pro Max could potentially access satellite-backed 5G connectivity, allowing for broader data services when outside traditional network range. Instead of relying purely on emergency messaging, the new system could treat satellites as an extension of the mobile network.
The C2 modem is also expected to improve overall 5G performance, possibly adding enhanced mmWave support and faster data speeds, marking a significant upgrade over Apple’s first-generation in-house modem.
However, hardware support alone isn’t enough. Apple would still need partnerships with satellite providers such as Globalstar or other low-Earth-orbit operators to enable widespread service. Infrastructure readiness and carrier cooperation will ultimately determine how expansive the feature becomes.
