Europe launches NanoIC pilot line to push next-generation chip development

NanoIC

Europe has officially launched NanoIC, a large-scale semiconductor pilot line aimed at developing and testing next-generation chips beyond the 2nm process node. The facility is based at imec’s research campus in Leuven, Belgium, and is part of the EU’s broader Chips Act strategy to strengthen its semiconductor ecosystem.

Unlike a traditional chip factory, NanoIC is designed as a research and prototyping platform. It will allow chipmakers, startups, and research institutions to experiment with advanced logic, memory, and system-on-chip technologies before moving to mass production. The pilot line will also focus on advanced packaging, new interconnect technologies, and High-NA EUV lithography, which is expected to play a key role in future chip manufacturing.

The project is backed by a massive investment of around €2.5 billion, funded through a mix of EU support, national government contributions, and industry partners. Several major European research institutes are involved, with imec leading the effort and coordinating collaboration across the region.
