Google Maps gets official Gemini AI integration with natural language Navigation

Google Maps

Google has officially rolled out Gemini AI integration in Google Maps on January 30, 2026. The update makes Maps more interactive by allowing users to ask complex, natural language questions directly while navigating.

With Gemini built into Maps, users can pose queries during navigation such as “Find a café with outdoor seating and vegan options along my route” and receive relevant recommendations without pausing or typing. The conversational AI supports multi-question interactions, meaning you can follow up with related queries like “What’s parking like there?” in the same session.

The rollout expands Gemini beyond its earlier hands-free driving features to include walking and cycling navigation, enabling safer voice-activated guidance for pedestrians and cyclists. Examples of useful voice queries include “Tell me more about the neighborhood I’m in,” “What are some must-see attractions nearby?” and “What’s my ETA?” all without leaving the navigation screen.

To use the feature, users can tap the Gemini icon in the Maps interface or simply say “Hey Google” during an active route. The update is rolling out worldwide on iOS where Gemini is supported, with Android availability expanding gradually.

This AI integration marks a step toward turning Google Maps into a real-time, conversational travel assistant, making navigation more intuitive and context-aware whether you’re driving, walking or cycling.
