You can now turn photos into videos in Google Photos

Google Photos is expanding its AI-powered “Photo to video” feature, giving users new ways to animate still images and turn them into short videos directly within the app.

Originally introduced as a simple tool that could breathe life into static photos with preset effects like “Subtle movement” or “I’m feeling lucky,” the feature is now getting text prompt support. This lets users type in descriptive prompts such as the kind of motion, style, or effect they want and watch as Google’s AI generates a short clip based on that description.

The latest update also makes audio part of the generated videos by default, so clips are immediately ready to share with sound without further editing.

This creative tool lives in the Create tab of Google Photos alongside other generative functions like Remix, Collage, and Highlight videos. The text prompt and animation options provide more control and personalization compared to the original presets, and Google even offers suggested prompts to help users get started.

The custom prompt capabilities are currently rolling out and may not be available in all regions yet, and they are limited to users aged 18 and over.
