WhatsApp Introduces Passkey-Encrypted Backups for Easier and Safer Access

WhatsApp Introduces Passkey-Encrypted Backups

WhatsApp is rolling out a new security feature that makes protecting your chat backups simpler and more secure. The company has announced support for passkey-encrypted backups, allowing users to secure their chats using their fingerprint, face, or device screen lock code instead of relying on a password or a lengthy 64-digit encryption key.

According to WhatsApp, this update ensures that “with just a tap or glance, the same security that protects your personal chats and calls on WhatsApp is applied to your chat backups.” This means your data remains safe, accessible, and private even if you change or restore your phone.

The passkey option simplifies the backup process by removing the need to remember complex passwords, making it easier for users to maintain end-to-end encryption. Once the feature becomes available on your device, you can enable it by navigating to:
Settings > Chats > Chat backup > End-to-end encrypted backup, and then selecting the Passkey option.

The rollout will happen gradually over the coming weeks and months, reaching both Android and iOS users globally.

This marks another step in WhatsApp’s ongoing efforts to strengthen user privacy and improve ease of use ensuring backups are not only secure but also convenient to access whenever needed.
